The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has published new guidelines for the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program. AREA awards support small scale health-related research projects proposed by faculty members otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs. The AREA program is a research grant program, not a training grant or fellowship program. However, the active involvement of undergraduate (preferred) and graduate students in the proposed research is highly encouraged, and reviewers will consider whether a project will expose students to meritorious research.
The new guidelines include several changes:
Applicants are strongly advised to review the AREA program website and direct questions to one of the AREA program representatives listed. NIH applications undergo two steps of review; peer review and institute/center (IC) review. While peer reviewers evaluate an application, the IC funds it, so early program officer contact is an important factor in application development, especially where a new program announcement is concerned.

The Elsevier Foundation, a philanthropic organization sponsored by Elsevier, a global publisher of scientific, technical, and medical information, is seeking new grant proposals for its 2009 Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries and New Scholars programs. The two programs will provide one, two, and three-year grants of up to $50,000 a year.
The Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries program supports the efforts of libraries in developing countries working to make scientific, technical, and medical information available to those who need it. Past projects have included expanding library information resources through digitization and knowledge preservation, training and education programs for librarians and researchers, and developed/developing world partnerships to provide long-term technical assistance and training.
The New Scholars program supports academic and research communities working to help scholars in the early stages of their science, health, and technology careers balance work and family responsibilities. Previous grants have promoted institutional research, advocacy, and policy development to retain, recruit, and develop women in science, and have enabled researchers to attend conferences critical to their careers by assisting with childcare, mentorship, and networking.
